Temporomandibular joint disorder or more commonly known as TMJ or TMD – is a condition that affects the area where the jawbone attaches to the skull. Natural motions of the jaw when chewing or speaking can cause severe pain and discomfort if you have TMJ. Common symptoms of TMJ include: headaches, jaw and facial pain, dizziness, and popping sensations. More severe cases of TMJ can often spread pain throughout the body, sometimes causing back and shoulder pain.

Causes of TMJ Disorder

There can be many reasons an individual develops TMJ, but the more common list includes:

  • Movement of the joint cushioning (TMJ disk)
  • Injury to the jaw joint or jaw
  • Injury to the tendons and musculature of the head and neck
